As one of the special activities of the 13th China Henan International Investment & Trade Fair, China (Henan)-UK Economic & Trade Seminar 2019 was held in Zhengzhou on the afternoon of April 8.
Rapid development of Henan-UK economic and trade cooperation
"I hope that the cooperation between Henan and the United Kingdom will be further strengthened in promoting trade, expanding industrial scope, and deepening cultural exchanges as we aim to create an enhanced edition of the 'Golden Age' for Sino-UK relations, and more 'golden results' will be achieved," said the vice-governor Shu Qing said at the seminar.
Henan and the rest of the world are inter-dependent for development. It is known that the seminar is another important event launched in Henan by its government and relevant organizations of UK to promote the bilateral cooperation following that with UK as the first guest of honor that sent a high-level delegation to the investment and trade fair in 2017 and the UK-Henan Business Roundtable in 2018. The seminar aims to promote two-way trade and investment between the two countries, and further promote economic and trade cooperation and exchanges between Henan and the UK.
The economic and trade cooperation between Henan and the UK currently is developing rapidly like never before. The UK has established 106 enterprises in Henan in machinery manufacturing, deep aluminum processing, real estate, catering and other fields, with an investment of 2.15 billion US dollars. At the same time, 16 companies from Henan have invested in the UK with a total amount of nearly 100 million US dollars. In 2018, the total trade volume between the two sides reached nearly 1.8 billion US dollars. Automobiles, cosmetics and engines from the UK see a broad market in Henan.
Unprecedented opportunities for economic and trade cooperation between Henan and the UK
The British Consul-General in Wuhan Gareth Hoar pointed out that bilateral investment and trade cooperation are crucial for China and the UK to build a comprehensive global strategic partnership toward the 21st century. The British Consulate General in Wuhan will try its best to promote bilateral and two-way investment and trade, and the cooperation between enterprises of both sides in high-end manufacturing, modern logistics, energy conservation and environmental protection, digital creativity, finance, and specialized services.
At the seminar, Kiran Patel, Senior Director of Business Development (China) at China-Britain Business Council, and Ma Qingyun, Chief Representative of Wales Government Office, made relevant presentations. Then Randeep Grewal, Chairman of AJW based in the UK, Adrian Pryce, a senior lecturer at the China and Emerging Economies Center of the University of Northampton, British representatives of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Arup Group, Deloitte, and British Chamber of Commerce in Henan, and Chinese representatives of famous enterprises based in Henan such as Yutong Bus, Zhongyuan Jikaien, Rebecca, and Guangli Technology, made keynote speeches.
The guests agreed that Henan is a land with a profound history, charm, vitality and great hope. It is building four “silk roads” respectively in the air, on land, online and at sea, to connect the Central Plains with the rest of the world. The Central Plains has become a great place for investment and development, and a stage for realizing dreams. Henan and the UK are faced with unprecedented opportunities and broad prospects for economic and trade cooperation.
In-depth development of Henan-UK cooperation
At the seminar, the Henan Provincial Commerce Department and the British Consulate General in Wuhan signed the Action Plan for Promoting Economic and Trade Cooperation.
According to the action plan, the two sides will carry out pragmatic cooperation at a higher level and in more fields and send Henan-UK cooperation into the "fast lane." The two sides will work together to promote the establishment of a long-term exchange mechanism for inter-enterprise communication and negotiation, comprehensively enhance the level of industrial cooperation, launch a number of cooperation projects, and elevate the bilateral investment and trade to a new level.
The reporter learned from the seminar that Henan and the UK will jointly explore trade growth points, further promote bilateral trade facilitation, encourage companies of both sides to broaden trade channels and optimize trade structure, further expand industrial cooperation, share the opportunities and achievements from Henan's economic development, further deepen cultural exchanges, and drive forward institutionalization and normalization of cooperation in the fields of education, science and technology, culture, health, and sports.
